Britain's most bizarre
benefits scandal
She convinced the council she couldn't walk. She convinced the community she was royalty.
Now available as a new two-part audio drama, The Countess tells the extraordinary true story behind one of Britain's strangest benefits scandals.
Adapted from Paul Kalburgi's verbatim play, the drama follows the rise and fall of Mariaska Romanov—a beloved community figure accused of living a double life. Hero, fraudster, fantasist, survivor. The truth lies somewhere in between.
